چکیده
Characteristics of near-inertial waves (NIWs) induced by the tropical storm Noul in South China Sea are analyzed based on situ observations, remote sensing, and analysis data. Remote sensing sea level anomaly data suggests that NIWs were influenced a southwestward moving anticyclonic eddy. The had comparable spectral density with internal tides, horizontal velocity 0.14–0.21 m/s. kinetic energy maximum value 7.5 J/m3 propagated downward vertical group speed 10 m/day. Downward propagation concentrated smaller wavenumber bands overwhelmed upward energy. e-folding time ranged from 4 to 11 days, larger resulted mesoscale eddies negative vorticity. Modified background relative vorticity, observed both red-shifted blue-shifted frequencies. propagating phase speeds wavelengths than NIWs. There was transfer field 8.5 × 10−9 m2 s−3 when total shear vorticity geostrophic currents commensurate. Our results suggest significant factor influencing generation Sea.

Can near-inertial internal waves in the East Sea be observed by synthetic aperture radar?
[1] Near-inertial ( 18 hours) internal waves were observed in the mid-western part of the East Sea on May 18 and 19, 2004 using C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Current and temperature measurements obtained during the field experiment from 10 May to 9 June 2004 (IWXES2004, Internal Wave eXperiment in the East Sea), were analyzed to investigate the processes by which near-inertial i...
متن کاملObserved drag coefficients in high winds in the near offshore of the South China Sea
This paper investigates the relationships between friction velocity, 10m drag coefficient, and 10m wind speed using data collected at two offshore observation towers (one over the sea and the other on an island) from seven typhoon episodes in the South China Sea from 2008 to 2014. The two towers were placed in areas with different water depths along a shore-normal line. The depth of water at th...
متن کاملPersistent and energetic bottom-trapped topographic Rossby waves observed in the southern South China Sea
Energetic fluctuations with periods of 9-14 days below a depth of 1400 m were observed in the southern South China Sea (SCS) from 5 years of direct measurements. We interpreted such fluctuations as topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) because they obey the dispersion relation. The TRWs persisted from May 24, 2009 to August 23, 2013, and their bottom current speed with a maximum of ~10 cm/s was one o...
متن کاملAn extreme internal solitary wave event observed in the northern South China Sea
With characteristics of large amplitude and strong current, internal solitary wave (ISW) is a major hazard to marine engineering and submarine navigation; it also has significant impacts on marine ecosystems and fishery activity. Among the world oceans, ISWs are particular active in the northern South China Sea (SCS). In this spirit, the SCS Internal Wave Experiment has been conducted since Mar...
